Seasonal temperature regulates network connectivity of salmon louse

چکیده

Abstract Chronically high infestation of salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) questions the sustainability Norwegian Atlantic (Salmo salar) aquaculture industry. The confinement millions hosts, within hundreds farms with overlapping larval dispersal kernels create structure for extremely persistent parasite meta-populations. However, processes regulating temporal variation in cross-contamination pelagic stages among (i.e. connectivity), a vital process driving population dynamics, are not well described. Here, we employ data driven biophysical model that reproduces three-and-a-half years production histories 132 western Norway and quantifies connectivity infective lice ocean currents. We show although complex geography fjords governs long-term topology network, there was strong seasonal component to network fragmentation. main de-structuring agent delayed infectivity at cooler temperatures increasing distances, enhanced by occasional large scale wind forcing events. Coordinated fallowing strategies de-lousing treatments only played marginal role fragmentation, suggesting novel restraining consider environmentally sensitive transport distances must be developed successfully break up network.

Lessons from sea louse and salmon epidemiology.

Effective disease management can benefit from mathematical models that identify drivers of epidemiological change and guide decision-making. This is well illustrated in the host-parasite system of sea lice and salmon, which has been modelled extensively due to the economic costs associated with sea louse infections on salmon farms and the conservation concerns associated with sea louse infectio...

The effect of light on the settlement of the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, on Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

The salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, is an ectoparasitic copepod that infests both wild and farmed salmonid fish. Salmon lice are a major disease problem in the farming of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and the possibility of salmon lice playing a role in the decline of wild anadromous stocks has also been raised. Lepeophtheirus salmonis can detect a range of stimuli (pressure/moving wa...

Physiological consequences of the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha): implications for wild salmon ecology and management, and for salmon aquaculture.

Pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, are the most abundant wild salmon species and are thought of as an indicator of ecosystem health. The salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, is endemic to pink salmon habitat but these ectoparasites have been implicated in reducing local pink salmon populations in the Broughton Archipelago, British Columbia. This allegation arose largely because juvenile pin...

Temporal Patterns of Sea Louse Infestation on Wild Pacific Salmon in Relation to the Fallowing of Atlantic Salmon Farms

—We report on a 3-year study of the infestation rates of the sea louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, on wild juvenile pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha and chum salmon O. keta in the Broughton Archipelago, British Columbia. In 2002, the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food ordered farm fallowing (i.e., the removal of farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from net-cages) along...

Sea Louse Infection of Juvenile Sockeye Salmon in Relation to Marine Salmon Farms on Canada's West Coast

BACKGROUND Pathogens are growing threats to wildlife. The rapid growth of marine salmon farms over the past two decades has increased host abundance for pathogenic sea lice in coastal waters, and wild juvenile salmon swimming past farms are frequently infected with lice. Here we report the first investigation of the potential role of salmon farms in transmitting sea lice to juvenile sockeye sal...
